Diversity and Women in Manufacturing

Women make up nearly half of the workforce today, at approximately 47 percent, as found by the Department of Labor (DOL). However, they only comprise less than 30 percent of manufacturing workers, and they hold even fewer jobs in leadership roles within this industry. However, with a resurgence for manufacturing and a boosted economy, Deloitte research shows that over the next ten years the manufacturing industry will need to fill 3.4 million jobs, mostly due to the influx of baby boomers retiring, and of those jobs, only 1.4 million can be filled by the current workforce. It should come as no surprise to learn that there is a stigma surrounding the manufacturing industry – one that favors a male-centric culture. Because of this, there is an obvious misrepresentation of women throughout the manufacturing industry. To be successful and climb the ladder in this sector, women must overcome the gender bias and fill the necessary positions that are traditionally held by men.

While two million manufacturing jobs need to be filled in coming years, lack of talent remains the largest issue for this gap. However, by tapping into the market for qualified women, this gap can be closed.

To attract and retain women in manufacturing, these businesses need to offer competitive jobs and pay, promote a healthy work-life balance, and provide opportunities to grow. Like any industry, providing mentorship and a quality work environment will attract and retain the qualified employees you need to thrive.

To do this, K-12 outreach may be necessary, as well as showcasing women in top roles. For example, Deloitte recommends that companies actively support school initiatives that increase young women’s interest in obtaining a technical education in order to meet the manufacturing industry’s long-term talent requirements.
