Look Out for These Resume Red Flags

Look Out for These Resume Red Flags

As a Florida business owner, you have myriad responsibilities ranging from marketing, securing your business with a Central Florida Commercial Insurance, and hiring the talent that will help your business succeed. A resume is often your first introduction to a job candidate. Next time you are in hiring mode, it’s imperative that you look out for these resume red flags.

Typos

Anyone in the workforce should be acutely aware of the importance of a stellar resume. After all, first impressions are lasting impressions. If your first impression of an applicant is, “he can’t spell” or “apparently he couldn’t be bothered to proofread his resume before sending it,” move on to a candidate that did pay attention to these critical details.

Too Many Jobs

If an applicant’s resume includes an unusually long list of employers, that is a huge red flag. It’s definitely not in your best interest to hire a job-hopper. Look for applicants who have remained at each of their jobs for a minimum of two years. If you hire a job-hopper, there’s a good chance you will spend valuable time, money, and resources training him only to have him quit.

Significant Unemployment Gap

If an applicant has been out of work for an extended period, the obvious questions are, “Why?” and “What was he doing during this time?” If you’re impressed by everything else on an applicant’s resume, besides an unemployment gap, take time to question the applicant and his past employers. A gap in employment shouldn’t necessarily be a deal breaker.

As Business Insider notes, there are legitimate reasons for job gaps, including extensive travel or an illness. There are plenty of talented individuals who have been laid off and could benefit your company. There are also individuals who have been unemployed because they’re not strong candidates or don’t possess updated skills. Take the time to find out the reasons behind the job gap.

Lack of References

Be wary of applicants who don’t list references. Strong candidates should have multiple references who will enthusiastically vouch for their skills and value. Job seekers who don’t list references probably leave this section off of their resume because they know their past employers won’t have great things to say about them.
