Winter Park Homeowners Insurance: Common Household Plumbing Problems

When you own a home, naturally you want to do everything in your power to protect it. This means keeping up on maintenance, ensuring that you have the right Winter Park homeowners’ insurance policy, and taking precautions to prevent damage to your home. One of the most common homeowner complaints is dealing with plumbing problems. However, the good news is that some of the most common plumbing problems are quite easy to fix, and doing the repairs yourself can potentially save you hundreds of dollar. Here are some of the most common plumbing problems and how to fix them.

Low water pressure from sink. Check to see if this is affecting both the hot and cold water. If it’s both, then the most likely cause is the aerator. Calcium deposits slowly building up in the faucet aerator and reduce the water pressure. A blocked aerator is a very easy thing to fix. Simply remove the aerator, clean out any debris and build up, and put it back on.

Slow draining sink or tub. This is usually due to the buildup of hair. Use a Zip-it tool or a pair of needle nose pliers to reach in and clear out the debris in the drain. If there is a tub stopper in the drain you may have to remove this too before getting to the clog. It’s a good idea to clear out the debris in the tub drain on a regular basis even if the tub is not draining slowly.

Running toilet. There are various things that can be causing this, but it’s usually an easy fix. The first step is to figure out what is the cause of the running toilet. Once you know which of the working parts of the toilet is causing the problem you can either replace it or repair it as needed.

Jammed garbage disposal. If you don’t have the key that game with the garbage disposal to help unjam it, an Allen wrench can be used to unjam a garbage disposal. At the very bottom of the disposal there is an opening to insert the key. Using a ¼ inch Allen wrench simply turn in both directions to free the motor.
