Orlando Car Insurance: IIHS’s Most Dangerous Autos
According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the chances of dying in an auto accident while riding in a late-model vehicle fallen by more than one-third in the three years between 2008 and 2011. Their most recent study indicates that the vast majority of motor vehicles are becoming much safer for both drivers and passengers as technology and safety features improve. However, there is still a large gap between the safest and most dangerous models according to the study, much of which correlates to craftsmanship and size.
According to the study, among all 2011 models only three cars have death rates greater than 100 per million registered vehicles and a record nine vehicles have driver death rates of zero. The study indicates that, with a few exceptions, motorist death rates tend to go down as vehicle size goes up. Among all types and sizes of cars, the smallest 4-door models generally have the highest driver death rate at 148 per million registered vehicle years. The next highest death rate among vehicles is in mini 2-door models with an average rate of 137 per vehicle. Minicars and small cars dominate the most dangerous list of vehicles due largely to their small stature and frame composition.
The vehicle with the highest death rate among the 2011 models according to the IIHS study is the Kia Rio, which had a rate of 149 driver deaths per million registered vehicle years. The Kia Rio is one of only three vehicles with an average death rate above 100. The Chevrolet Blazer is also among the three most deadly models with a rate of 232 driver deaths per million registered 2-door, 2 wheel-drive model. Contrarily, midsize and very large luxury models have the lowest rates of roughly 33 and 34death per million respectively. The Chevrolet Astro minivan for example has reportedly the lowest driver death rate of 7 per million.
There are however, exceptions to the general rule that larger vehicles are safer. For example, the driver death rate is higher in midsize sports cars than in small or mini sports cars. Larger sports car death rates total 115 per million, while mini sports car driver death rates are 107 per million and or small sports car deaths are 71 per million according to the IIHS. Furthermore, 4-wheel-drive SUVs display a higher death rate which is higher than most midsized and small compact vehicles. Furthermore, over all, luxury cars of all sizes have the lowest overall driver deaths of all auto models.
