If you’ve lived through a Sunshine State summer, you know that our storms are frequent and sometimes very severe. You probably don’t have the luxury of staying home during every storm. Reduce your risks by heeding these driving tips, and make sure you’re protected with a comprehensive Auto Umbrella Insurance policy should you be involved in an accident due to severe weather.
Prepare
If you have not yet prepared your vehicle for driving in storms, now is the time. Replace windshield wipers and headlights, and equip your car with an emergency kit. Additionally, make sure your car’s tires and brakes are in optimal condition.
Slow Down
When driving on wet roads, it takes longer to stop. If you slam on your brakes, you risk losing control of your vehicle or hydroplaning. If you need to slow down or stop and can do so by coasting to a slower speed rather than braking, that will reduce your risk of hydroplaning.
Stay Centered
In heavy rain, water ponds on the sides of the roads first and then encroach on the outer lanes. Stay in the center lane for the best traction.
Back Off
Leave extra space between your car and the car in front of it (instead of the 3-second rule, follow a 5-plus-second rule (the harder the rain is falling, the more space you should leave). Avoid following large vehicles, buses, and trucks. When larger vehicles drive through ponding water, they’ll spray your windshield and impact your ability to see.
Turn Around Don’t Drown
This is more than a catchy phrase. It’s solid advice that can save your life. According to the National Weather Service, just six inches of water will reach the bottom of most cars and cause drivers to lose control or stall, one foot of water will cause most cars to float, and two feet of fast-moving water can carry away even large SUVs and trucks. When in doubt, do not proceed.
