Paid Sick Leave: Fewer Workers Comp Injuries

Florida Workers Compensation

When workers are injured or ill, it takes a toll not only on their health but on their company as well. Workers comp costs rise, and the longer it takes an employee to return to work, the more it costs a company. A new study has shown that sick leave can reduce health and workers’ comp costs.

According to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, workers with access to paid sick leave were 28% less likely overall to suffer occupational injuries than workers without access to paid sick leave.

The study, Paid Sick Leave and Nonfatal Occupational Injuries, is published in the American Journal of Public Health. It involved a survey of more than 38,000 working adults from 2005-2008. Those in the sample were asked whether they had access to paid sick leave and whether they had suffered anything that required medical attention in the past few months.

Sick leave is associated with shorter recovery times and reduced complications from minor health problems. Approximately 43% of private sector workers in the U.S. reported having no paid sick leave.  It can improve safety and productivity at work as well. Safer operations and fewer injuries occurred with fewer people working while they were sick. It also prevented the spread of contagious diseases.

Paid sick leave helped reduce costs on several fronts. It reduced absenteeism, ensuring employees were healthy and didn’t miss work as much because they had the time to fully recover, and it reduced ‘presenteeism,’ where sick workers continued to work but were less productive and in danger of infecting other workers.
