Orlando Flood Insurance: Hurricane Preparedness & Disaster Prevention

Tropical storm Andrea hit Florida this past week, taking the title as the first named storm of the hurricane season. All Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico coastal areas are subject to hurricanes. The Atlantic hurricane season lasts from June to November, with the peak season from mid-August to late October.

Hurricanes can cause catastrophic damage to coastlines and even several hundred miles inland. It is essential to have a Disaster Prevention plan so you are ready if/when a storm hits. A proper disaster prevention plan should include:

Emergency family plan. Make sure your family has a plan in case of an emergency. Sit down together and decide how you will get in contact with each other, where you will go and what to do in an emergency. Keep a copy of the plan in your emergency supply kit or other safe place where you can access it in the event of a disaster. And if you have any furry members of the family, make sure to have a Pet Plan in place for them too!

Disaster supplies kit. Make sure you have a basic emergency supply kit stocked and on hand. Store it in a place that every family member can access and make sure they know about it. Make sure you have the following:

  • Water- One gallon of water per person per day for at least three days.
  • Food- 3 day supply of non-perishable food
  • Battery-powered or hand crank radio
  • Flashlight and extra batteries
  • First aid kit
  • Whistle to signal for help
  • Dust mask to help filter contaminated air
  • Moist towelettes, garbage bags, plastic ties
  • Manual can opener for food
  • wrench or pliers to turn off utilities
  • Local maps
  • Cell phone with chargers, inverter or solar charger
